I've been crying out for a return to focusing on Kei and Hikari in this series for what seems like aeons now, and as we reach the closing stretch of the show I finally get my wish with an episode that focuses almost solely on the two of them, with some pretty big hints that this is the way it's going to be for those final few episodes. Hurrah!
As episodes of Special A go this was a pretty reasonable affair, with Hikari dragged into spying on Kei's every day school life to help out an employee of Kei's grandfather in deciding whether his current school is 'suitable' for such an all-round genius. Of course, the rest of the series would be boring if they decided it was, so the president of the Takashima Group wants Kei to finish his schooling in London (where surely he'll end up getting stabbed or something?), much to Hikari's chagrin.
The episode ends with Kei half-jokingly pondering out loud to Hikari whether he loves her or not, which she resolutely denies, but surely it's now only a matter of time before they get together and live happily ever after -Hell, even Hikari can only be so stupid before noticing what's going on.
It's odd really - Although this series has never really lit my fire hugely, I have become rather fond of it many ways, particularly as we've moved into the second half of the show and things have settled down a little. Although I could pile up negative points to bring up about it (and I doubtless have in previous discussions of the series), deep down I actually quite enjoy sitting down to watch Special A even when it isn't firing on all cylinders. At the end of the day, I suppose that's what really counts over any kind of critical opinion.
