It's been a while since the last episode of the 'Next Season' OVA of Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, but at last we get our third instalment of this follow-up to that really rather awesome anime.
While this OVA claims to follow the original game's 'Haruka route', we really don't get to see a lot of Haruka at all during this episode, with the focus of this particular instalment concentrating almost entirely on her sister. Despite that, what follows actually weaves a slightly interesting emotional picture of Akane, from her frequent rejections of guys who confess to her together what appears to be a rather conflicting feeling of wanting the best for Haruka while also caring about Takayuki's own well-being.
In all honesty, not a lot happens during the course of this particular episode (aside from its ending, which looks likely to bring the disparate elements of these first three episodes together), and indeed it almost feels a little bit like a kind of recap episode in a strange sort of way, but even with that in mind there's a certain gentle and naive charm to it all, much like Akane itself. After looking at the way a series like True Tears handled complicated affairs of the heart, it's difficult for anything to match it these days, and in that sense this particular OVA is a disappointment especially considering the excellent material from which it has spawned, but at the same time its characters have just about enough going for them to pull this episode through to its climax, and it certainly looks as though things will be taking a more dramatic turn in episode four, which can only be a good thing.
