Chi's Sweet Home: Chi's New Address - Episodes 13-36

It's been quite a while since I last sat down to catch up on Chi's Sweet Home, but now finally I'm back up to speed with the show after a marathon session of cuteness that could have quite possibly threatened the fibre of my being. Or something.


To be honest, "cute" is pretty much the only word required to sum up the show, from Chi's efforts in learning how to use a cat flap through to getting lost (yet again) and other typical highlights of cat-like behaviour such as trapsing through the house and over clean washing with filthy paws. Not that I'm bitter about such flagrant disregards for humankind displayed by our feline friends or anything. No, the mud and dirt on my blanket as I write this is no problem at all...

Anyhow, I digress... Aside from Chi's solo adventures, our favourite kitten's new home puts her in the vicinity of some interesting new neighbours, from a posh Scottish Fold cat through to a typically raft daft (if obedient dog), and a rabbit that to be quite honest freaks me out a bit for some reason.

Regardless, it's all good, clean (well, apart from Chi's paws) and honest fun which I can't get enough of, even if watching over twenty episodes in one sitting probably isn't the recommended way to digest this particular series despite its short episode times.

Chi's Sweet Home: Chi's New Address - Episodes 3-12

Some of the latest new episodes of Chi's Sweet Home get about as close as this series will probably ever come to powerful emotional drama - With the prospect of Chi being sent away to Hokkaido moving ever closer, Youhei's parents still haven't told him the bad news. Naturally, once he overhears this for himself he's more than a little upset, prompting him to try and run away with Chi.

Although he doesn't get far the emotions run high, and eventually his parents realise that there's only one way forward - To move to a new home where pets are allowed. And whaddya know, just at that moment they see a huge advertising hoarding for just such a place!


From here on in we enter more traditional Chi's Sweet Home territory, with Chi making the most of investigating and enjoying the boxes used to move the family, being terrified by the moving process, and finding her own way of settling down in her next (and it has to be said, rather awesome-looking) apartment. As always, it's adorable and amusing to watch - You can never have too much Chi's Sweet Home if you ask me.

Chi's Sweet Home: Chi's New Address - Episodes 1-2

I don't think there will be much in the way of a contest if I assert that Chi's Sweet Home was the most adorable anime series of 2008, bringing us a cornucopia of brief episodes showing us the life of this sweet, trouble-maker of a kitten. So successful was its depiction of living with a cat that here we are in time for a second season, subtitled A New Home (not to be confused with A New Hope, which is a Star Wars movie).


Naturally, I won't be 'Blogging about this series every episode (even I'm not that crazy), but I thought I'd cover the opening pair of instalments if only to remind myself how cute Chi is (and also why hearing Ushio's voice in Clannad - After Story for the first time made me laugh so much - They share the same voice actress). Needless to say, she doesn't disappoint, loitering with intent to sneak out at the first available opportunity and hammering on doors to be let out much like my own cat. With our poor heroine trapped indoors, her family need to make a tough decision regarding her future and happiness, leading to dreams (or should I say nightmares) about a Chi-free world...

In all honesty, a series like Hetalia should take a long hard look at Chi's Sweet Home, which manages to pack more fun and interesting moments into three minutes than it manages in five. Of course, you have to love cats (and preferably have owned one) to "get it", but if you do then this series becomes oddly gripping in its own cute little way.

Chi's Sweet Home - Episodes 89-104 (Completed)

Chi's Sweet Home is finally over, and I really can't help but feel sad to see the end of such a wonderful and beautifully realised series.

This final batch of episodes proves that it's hard to catch a cat on camera, sees Chi come face to face with a girl as energetic as she is, and finally sees Chi land herself in all sorts of trouble with the black "bear" cat to close out the series. It says a lot about how much emotion I've invested in Chi and her adventures that I actually shed a tear to see her unhappy in what were some really poignant moments considering it's 'just' a playful kitten we're talking about here.


I really can't state enough how perfect Chi's Sweet Home is for any cat lover, as it captures the essence of the average feline so perfectly that it becomes incredibly easy to relate Chi's behaviour to that of cats you own or have known yourself. I'm really going to miss my occasional dose of Chi and all the fun and cuteness it brought me, but given the non-committal ending to this series there's certainly plenty of room for more episodes - Chi's Sweet Home could simply run and run, and I for one hope it does. Could a series of three-minute episodes really be one of the best anime shows of 2008? You bet your life it could.

Chi's Sweet Home - Episodes 84-88

Another five episodes of Chi's Sweet Home sees the series continue to be as absolutely and wonderfully adorable as ever, as Chi gets himself into some more trouble at the hands of the big black 'bear' cat, in turn leading to stress aplenty for his family (and laughs aplenty for us) as they try to hide him away from the landlady.

There's nothing more to say about this series that hasn't been said already - Where Chocolate Underground suffers for its short episode time, Chi's Sweet Home absolutely thrives on it, and is just so beautifully realised that I can do nothing but lavish praise on it. As per usual, it's a must-watch for cat owners and cat lovers... Hell, possibly even for cats themselves.

Chi's Sweet Home - Episodes 77-83

There's honestly nothing left for me to say about Chi's Sweet Home at this point, so I can really be brief in saying that this latest bunch of episodes are as cute and lovable as ever.


Chi plays some more, wins but loses at Hide and Seek, and learns how to hunt thanks to the big black cat, and all of this means in simple terms that the series continues to be both adorable and right on the mark when it comes to depicting the life of your average household cat or kitten.

For its pure fun and cuteness factor, this has to be one of the best series of 2008 hands-down.

Chi's Sweet Home - Episodes 69-76

Another batch of episodes of Chi's Sweet Home invariably means another batch of utter feline cuteness.

This time around, Chi discovers the joys of milk, a hidden stash of cat biscuits, home-made cat meals (a note in the unlikely event that my own cat is reading this: Don't even think about it), and so on.


What more can I say? It's a glorious and wonderful (and often very realistic) series for any cat owner, and that's all there is to it. Who would have thought that episode after episode of a cat being brushed would be so fantastic?

Chi's Sweet Home - Episodes 53-68

There really isn't anything new I can say about Chi's Sweet Home that I haven't mentioned already, as it continues to be the single most adorable anime I can ever remember watching. Not only is Chi singularly cute and lovable, she's also so perfectly cat-like that anyone who has a moggy of their own will smile with recognition at each and every episode, whether it involves a trip to the vet, thunder and lightning, or simply having said cat curl up on your lap looking to sleep at the most inappropriate moment possible.


What more can I say than that? At two minutes an episode, coupled with at least half a dozen exclamations of "Awwwww" or "How cute!" from myself per episode, it doesn't get much better than this.

Chi's Sweet Home - Episodes 41-52

Oh adorable Chi, how have I managed to go so long without watching watching any of your equally adorable exploits?

I'm not sure how I ended up quite so far behind with watching this series (and with two minutes per episode the order of the day, I can hardly say I haven't had time), but I have indeed fallen behind to the point where I've had to break my watching of this series into two big chunks.

This particular batch of episodes takes in the scary yet ultimately educational appearance of a huge black cat, the dangers of sticky tape, and that oh-so fine balance of giving your cat the affection it needs without over-doing it (something which to this day is some kind of arcane art form for me). All of this takes place with the usual cute and fun tone of this series, with Chi herself being as wonderfully expressive as ever, while leaving you nodding in recognition at the utterly cat-like behaviour often on show here.


Really, it's a little work of genius for putting the life of a kitten into focus in such an entertaining way that rings true for any cat owner, and for that reason alone it's a highly enjoyable series to watch. Sure, some of the jokes seem to be getting repeated now as the series draws on, but with Chi behaving so adorably it's hard to get too het up about it.

With that I must go, as my own cat has decided that he's far more worthy of my attentions than some mere anime 'Blog....

Chi's Sweet Home - Episodes 33-40

Never mind the not particularly top-notch animation here, Chi's Sweet Home still manages to make everyone's favourite kitten both irresistibly adorable and hugely expressive. In this latest batch of miniature episodes, Chi discovers the joy that is known to every household cat as sitting on a window ledge and looking out over the world (no matter what problems that might cause your owners), what it's like to taste human food both good and bad, the dilemma that is what to do wen your owner is having fun in the bath (toys versus water, can there be a worse conflict for a cat?), and the battle with said owner for space on the bed at night, a battle which the cat is guaranteed to win 100% of the time (something I've learned from years of bitter experience).


The beauty of Chi's Sweet Home is that Chi is so... well... cat-like. Anyone who owns or has owned a cat of kitten will instantly recognise most of the behaviour on show here, and revel in its familiarity. At just a few minutes apiece, every episode of this series is a tiny little gem that's always guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Chi's Sweet Home - Episodes 21-32

Let us be candid here for a moment - There is nothing more that I can possibly say about Chi's Sweet Home. It's about a kitten. A cute kitten. A cute kitten who does cute things. If you aren't sold by the premise alone, then this series is not for you.

This latest batch of episodes sees Chi visit the vet, get her nails trimmed after developing a penchant for scratching sofas and designer jeans, and then finally gets to rule the roost as the family leave her to house sit for a day, with predictably destructive consequences. In short, it's all adorable, and it's all scarily cat-like for anyone who has ever shared a house with a feline, and particularly a kitten. As ever, the only real world of summation required is: Awwwww....

Chi's Sweet Home - Episodes 13-20

Really, there's nothing new to say about Chi's Sweet Home that I haven't mentioned already. In a word, it's adorable, and that's pretty much all there is to it.

In this bundle of episode, Chi gets some toys (but in true feline fashion, finds the plastic bag they came in more interesting), and runs away to explore the big, wide outdoor world with all the fun and dangers that go with it.

All in all, what I really want to know is - Just how long has my own cat been writing scripts for an anime series? Some of the stories portrayed here are uncanny in their likeness... I guess that's what makes this series a cut above your average "Oh look, cute kitties!" kind of anime, as it's something that any cat owner can most likely easily relate to. Oh yes, and it's adorable, which always helps.

Chi's Sweet Home - Episodes 5-12

Chi's Sweet Home is a highbrow exposé of the feelings of loneliness and maladjustment suffered by modern day families in the 21st century as the pressures of everyday living dictate that they exist in ever more compartmentalised lives. Or, it could just be a show about a really cute kitten, I'm not sure which.

Anyway, I've fallen rather behind with this series (inexcusable considering each episode is only a couple of minutes long), but thanks to a 'marathon' session I've now caught up with such important events as the cat litter arc, which results in Chi finally getting name, and other important events that I couldn't possibly post spoilers about.

Really, it's this simple - Chi's Sweet Home is adorable, and if you've ever owned a cat the chances are you'll recognise a lot of the mannerisms (although hopefully not the problem of cat piss on your laundry) which are beautifully done despite the rather cheap and cheerful animation. I've said before that the only proper response to this series is "Awwwww", and I stand by that opinion firmly.

Chi's Sweet Home - Episode 4

Another sub-five minute vignette courtesy of Chi's Sweet Home means another excuse to remember why cats are so damned cute and lovable, with Chi's determination to find his way home being side-tracked by milk, a dripping tap, and a shoelace. It's so cat-like and adorably animated despite the repeated use of the same frames of animation, that despite its minuscule length it still manages to be the highlight of an anime watching evening.

Chi's Sweet Home - Episode 2-3

At just a few minutes long each, an episode of Chi's Sweet Home is hard to find much to criticise. Yes, the animation is pretty poor, but somehow it doesn't stop little Chi from being adorable despite the rather run-of-the-mill situations he finds himself in.

I'm convinced that my own cat has written the opening song to this anime, its lyrical descriptions certainly sound familiar. Anyway, if you're a cat lover then this series probably won't fail to warm your heart and put a stupid smile on your face. By rights it should be stupid, but somehow it simply isn't.

Chi's Sweet Home - Episode 1

Chi's Sweet Home is a series of brief five-minute episodes, taken from a manga which tells the story of a lost kitten (Chi, obviously), who is discovered and taken in by a family.

The animation is pretty basic, but given the fact that the content features a cute kitten, the opening episode can be summed up in just a single word - Awwwwwwwwww.

It's safe to say that the sole purpose of this series is to bring the word 'kawaii' to your lips, and to be fair, the first episode succeeds in that. Yes, it's no deep magnum opus or fantastic psychological study, but it's about a kitten, what more do you want?!
